March of the Machines

March of the Machines

Technology is making our lives simpler, and helping industry to be more efficient, but is it at the cost of our jobs?

Everyone thinks about "what they want to be when they grow up". Do you have to take another look at what you've planned, or start thinking of a new career, because of advances in technology? If you think about it, it's a good thing that we've r
olled out the ACP program, because it's important to be aware of what your talents, skill and abilities are, and how they align with what's waiting out there in the world.

What is the job market going to look like when you look for that first job?

Discuss this idea. I've just given you a couple of questions to get the thought process going.

  1. I feel like the new job industry is going to based around people who can fix the robots when they break, people who can program them, and people who can build them. In my opinion that means that in the future everyone is going to need to be educated in all this stuff and that means that more people might need to go to college. There also will be an increase in jobs for the people who will manufacture the parts to build these robots.

    1. I agree we still need humans in the workforce because the whole reason why there are robots in the first place is because people made them and robots can't fix themselves. If they were to "wipe out all humans" who would ever fix them?

    2. I agree, we are going to start needing people to fix the robots so that will create more jobs. Programing and building robots would be a big job too besides when they can make themselves. The future is going to be more dependent on education, the more education you have, the more likely you can get a job.

  2. I think some jobs need robots for certain things to make it easier, but I think it should be mostly humans working because I think its going to make us lazy having robots do all our work and people wouldn't be making money if they don't have a job because the robots are doing it all.

    1. I agree! If we always rely on robots we will most likely become lazy and unproductive. It'll become harder for people to find employment and they may suffer financially. It may also be harder for people to lean certain values like having a good work ethic and the value of a dollar.

    2. I agree too. If to many people start to rely on robots then they will become lazy and more reliant on some machine to do jobs that people could easily do. It will also be harder for people to find jobs and the unemployment rate will probably increase. It will also teach bad values to people and teach them that they don't have to do things as long as a robot can.

      Delete
    3. I agree if robots take all of the jobs the only people that will be making money are the people who build the robots and the people who own them. So the unemployment rate will go way up and that is bad for the economy overall.

  3. Personally, I don't think robots will take over every job, but they will affect some. I feel that it would be hard for a robot to be a teacher or something along those lines that requires feelings and the ability to connect with other humans. Robots can be useful for jobs that are in factories or jobs that require little thinking and human interaction.

    1. I agree Talia, it would be hard for a robot to do a job like a teacher or other jobs that you need to interact with people. But, they are good for simple jobs in factories.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, Talia! I was thinking about how bad that would be if jobs like nurses, doctors, and teachers as you said were overtaken by robots. But you bring up a good point that it would be hard for a person to do a job like that. It probably won't happen since it'd be hard, at least I hope it wouldn't!

      Delete
    3. I agree the feeling a robot has is zero but only humans will be the ones to handle these jobs.

      Delete
    4. Talia I disagree with you, It is 2019 and we already have robots working in places taking over peoples jobs. A couple more decades and robots will take over. If I were you I would start saving your money now!!

    5. Harley, robots will not take over the world. At least not when we're here. I don't know how they will take over the world but i'm guessing they will have to kill us all, and I won't let that happen.

    6. TALIA, It is 2019 and robots are already taking over people jobs so they cannot pay rent and have to live in a box on the streets. If you think robots will not take over the world something is wrong with you. If the robots have to kill us to take over the world they will, if i were you i'd take cover now!!!

      Delete
    7. HARLEY robots won't take over and we will not be living in boxes. We will have to find new jobs that the robots can't do!!!

      Delete
    8. I agree Talia, I think to have a job such as a doctor, teacher, lawyer you have to have emotion and human interaction. Robots can't do everything humans can do.

      Delete
    9. Well we are not going to be living in boxes that is for sure! And we will just have to find harder jobs that computers can't solve and robots can't do either.

      Delete
    10. I agree, it will be hard for robots to take over all jobs. Even though there is online education, a lot of people prefer to be taught in person so you would need a teacher. Robots wouldn't be able to show emotion and stuff to be able to take over jobs like that. People still need to interact with other people.

  4. I think that robots will take over many jobs in areas such as manufacturing, etc. Many people will lose jobs and will be replaced by robots who will do the same job more efficiently and effectively. I think that this will have snowball effect, leading to an economic depression.

    1. I agree many or most of the jobs out there right now may not be there no more because of these robots.

      Delete
    2. Thats a good point, and there are certain jobs that could never be replaced by robots simply because humans could do it better like truck drivers and teachers. But they do have the possibility to take a lot of jobs so it could start an economic depression.

      Delete
    3. The use of robots could lead to a depression. I think people in power will realize that and either put restrictions on robots or find a way to make new jobs.

  5. I really have mixed feelings abut this whole thing. I think it is great that technology has come so far and that we have robots and robotic computers but I don't like how it's taking over people's jobs. I think it's sad that so many jobs are being taken over. It'll make it harder for people to find employment or if not that it'll at least be harder for some people to get jobs they actually like and find enjoyment in. Those who who enjoy working in factories, stores, being in the military, and other jobs often done by robots may have to get a job they don't really enjoy because robots are taking over the jobs they like. I don't like that because people should be able to have a job they actually enjoy!

    2. i also agree kaitlyn people who enjoy working are loosing there jobs and cant find another job they like.

  6. The advancement of technology can be beneficial and also a negative thing. It can cause many people to lose their jobs and have them replaced by robots. It also can be a good thing though because robots can do the jobs that are extremely hard or that people do not want to do. I also do not think that the robots and machines will be able to take over every job there is.

    1. I agree that robots will be beneficial to do jobs that are extremely dangerous or are very hard on your body. On the downside, unemployed people will not have money to support their families. This might lead to larger issues with economics. This might then lead to a nation/worldwide depression.

    2. I agree that there could be some positive results from using robots in some career paths especially those that are dangerous or hard to do. That being said I also think it could have negative impact as well. They probably won't take over all jobs, but the ones that are taken over will contribute to job shortages leaving people without ways to pay there bills while the others who design and build the robots will be thriving.

      Delete
    3. I agree, robots can have positives such as jobs that humans can not do as fast as robots but they can have negatives such as taking over jobs, I don't think they will take every job but they probably can do a lot more than humans and faster.

      Delete
    4. i agree that it could be useful for hard jobs but i also think that they are replacing simple jobs that humans should be doing.

  7. Most people will lose their jobs and or go bankrupt because these machine will control mostly every job. The percent of people going broke will skyrocket as well.

  8. I think that this has it's pros and cons. Yes, it can save money for a company in the long run but it can lead to less jobs for humans which can lead to a running chain of problems.

    1. Some more positives are that they are much more cheaper than humans as their cost is lowering. Another pro is that they are stronger, faster, and more precise. They also do not get tired and never need a break.

    2. It is going to save money for the big companies and decrease job opportunities for everyone. And it's going to make the person making the robots a lot of money, leaving the middle and lower class workers behind, so it's a pretty unstable system. I think it's happening no matter what, and that's frightening.

      Delete
    3. Yes, it is very frightening. It would also be very disappointing if you spent money to go to college and get a degree, all to figure out that they are no longer hiring people. Those people are now being replaced with robots who can do the work in half the time.

      Delete
    4. It'll make it harder for people to find employment or if not that it'll at least be harder for some people to get jobs they actually like and find enjoyment in. Those who who enjoy working in factories, and stores. I don't like that because people should be able to have a job they'll enjoy!

  9. I think that robots should not be working in like restaurants or anywhere where there are humans for a few reasons, they are creepy and might scare little kids, and they are kicking people out of jobs where they could be working and making money to pay the bills but theres a robot there instead. Robots should be working in factories making stuff not working in a restaurant.

    1. I agree not only are they minimizing job opportunities for humans, but some of them can be pretty unsettling, especially the ones that are supposed to resemble humans.

    2. I agree. A lot of people enjoy working in the culinary field and its a good job for making money and taking care of a family. By replacing them with robots, it would be taking that away from them. This would be especially hard on single parents who already work hard to provide for their family. I also agree that the idea of robots being there could be unsettling and creepy.

      Delete
    3. I agree, robots should not be working in restaurants. They can be creepy when they look like real people, which could scare customers. Robots aren't meant for jobs that involve human contact.

      Delete
    4. i agree, they should not be taking normal jobs from people.

  10. i think robots are taking over and people will become lazy and useless. the world will become a big block of metal and we will stop appreciating life because it will be boring and we will have nothing to do and we will be unable to buy things because we wont have jobs. then the people with jobs will go out of business cause they have nobody to buy their products.

    1. I agree Amelia, the more technology there is the more humans will sit, kids already dont wanna go outside, In my opinion Robots are a bad thing.

  11. I think robots will definitely replace most of the world's jobs. Almost everyone's job is at risk of becoming automated. You could definitely make a good living by making or programming the robots. The learning programs are getting more and more advanced. People are actually freaking out about an AI apocalypse, like Terminator. I think that's unlikely, because people aren't comfortable letting an AI do whatever it wants unmonitored. They will build robots to do simple jobs. If that's your job then you might need to find a new one, and that's just how it works.

    1. I agree. Robots are already taking over a lot of jobs and its effecting people negatively. It is making it more and more harder for people to find jobs especially in a career path that they actually enjoy doing.

    2. I agree joe, I heard that robots are going to work in fast foot, and restaurants, when robots come into play, a lot of humans will lose their jobs, the Rich will get Richer and the poor will get poorer.

  12. How i see it, Robots are good and bad, im not a fan because they cant be trusted, a few of them robots said on live TV, saying that they will have their own human farm. Yea robots may be alright in the work force, but i dont think that they'll be human friendly.

  13. Robots are going to replace lost of jobs around the world. Lots of jobs are going to be lost. But what we cant adapt to that change? Then what.

    1. i agree that they will take lots of jobs, but they will also create more

  14. I think that it could go either way, they could definitely take over many jobs and places in the work field, but there are things that they wont be able to do. And there will also be new jobs where people will have to assist the robots, or repair them so even though they are taking some jobs they will also create more jobs.

  15. I think people are just making robots to do there own jobs so they can be with there families and not be out doing hard labor work. Like can robots do construction? or would we still have to do that are selves? If we trust robots so much, would you wanna have your house be all robotic? Personally no i wouldn't want a fridge talking to me saying what i need to buy at the store, all in all i think robots taking over jobs wouldn't be the smartest idea in todays world.

    ReplyDelete
  16. If robots take over a very high amount jobs people will end up poor and have no money, see we pay for gas, food, water, ect with money, but if we don't have money then we cant buy the stuff we need.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I believe that robots are needed for certain jobs such as humans are needed for certain jobs. Eve though I say that I do think that one day robots could take over every kind of job and replace humans as "machines".

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think that robots are going to slowly take away jobs but they are not yet advanced enough to take all of our jobs. Besides, if robots take over some of our jobs, we will need someone to fix the robots, program them, design them, and etc... There are also a lot of jobs a robot wouldn't be able to do and that only people can do. Eventually I think that robots can take over but honestly I don't think that they can take over very much, and it will take awhile until they actually take a lot of our jobs.
