The Skills Gap

The Skills Gap

After watching the 60 Minutes report, discuss the following:

Despite the fact that the U.S. has a very high unemployment rate, there are some career areas where there are thousands of jobs available that can't be filled.  Why is this?

What can be done - who, according to the video, should have a greater role in this?

60 Minutes: "The Skills Gap"

50 comments:

  1. The manufacturing jobs can't be filled because employeers can't find qualified workers to do those jobs. Most jobs require certain skills that people aren't taught in high school. Manufacturers have to train or retrain their employees to learn the certain skills that their jobs require. Which is becoming harder because they no longer want to put in the money or can't afford to retrain these employees.

    1. I agree, less people are being trained to do these jobs because of costs. Which causes manufacturers to only hire the people with training because it saves them money.

    2. Yes, and the issue that is evolving is the fact that there are no qualified workers for these jobs. People no longer want to put the work in to be successful. Instead they think that they are entitled to a specific job or position.

    3. I agree, and most manufacturing jobs are hard labor. And not many people are willing to put up with it without a big paycheck. Jobs like that need to start to be willing to send their workers to college, or start a high school course that allows them to show people who are interested how to do the things they need to do.

  2. Manufacturing jobs are mostly open because people do not want to put the effort in for these jobs, employers cannot find qualified workers. Training or retraining new people can be a long process that they have to put money into. Skills needed for these jobs are only taught in select scenarios, such as taking a class in high school although some high schools don't offer them.

    1. I agree, most people don't specifically want to do this job but they dont have the time to change their jobs career.

    2. Some people just do not want to go back to school or give it any time or effort to get a job that involves a little more work.

    3. People feel that they are automatically going to get the job they want just because they apply for it. They don't want to spend money to go college to gain more knowledge.

    4. I agree Brooke, it is hard to find empolyees who want to put in the effort to do these manufacturing jobs. Since most people aren't taught the skills needed to work in this field, they have to be trained, which can be a long and costly process

    5. Yes, it's really hard to bind people that will put in the effort into the jobs. It's also really hard on your body too.

  3. I think over time with the advancement of computers, humans tend to rely more on technology then ever before. Like the man said in the video, people might just be lazy, they might think the jobs requires math. In this day in age nobody wants to do anymore work then they have to and everybody plans on taking the easiest way out of schooling.

    1. es, you're right Cady. I think people have become more lazy with the advancement of computers. Lots of people probably figure that if a computer can do something then there's no sense in doing it themselves, especially things like math and problem solving because most people tend to dislike mathematics.

    2. I agree, people are becoming very lazy and nobody wants to do anything. If they need skills or work experience to get a job they won't put in the effort to get.

    3. I feel like the advancement of technology will play a big role in manufacturing. If it gets advanced enough it could end up running on it's own without humans. That could either be great or terrible, because it means less manpower is needed, but also people aren't going to be able to get jobs. We'll just have to wait and see.

  4. Its hard for certain jobs like factory work or maufacturing to be done because there are so few people that are qualified and interested in having such jobs. That's why I think it is great when colleges and even high schools offer programs in such areas. After all, how will people know wether or not they are interested in that kind of work if they never get the opportunity to be trained and try it out?

    1. I agree, you never will know your interests if you don't try it. Not many people are interested in the jobs just because they don't try or apply themselves to something new.

    2. i agree kate nobody goes to college for manufacturing anymore.

  5. There are many areas in the workforce that have job openings. The issue is that the employer cannot find employees that have the drive and skills to work. Students no longer want to apply themselves and it is becoming a major issue. Others cannot afford to go to college to obtain certain skills needed for the job.

    1. I agree, most people just don't have the same motivation. Sure people still want to make money, but they don't want to put the work into it.

    2. Yes and people think that the jobs are dangerous and dirty and that sitting around working on machines all day is dumb. Also people think that the jobs that are provided will be boring.

    3. I agree, people no longer want to apply themselves, which makes it harder to find jobs they are willing to do. The jobs that are open require work which not many people are willing to do.

  6. These jobs can not be filled because people have become lazy and no one wants to do a job where they really have to work at it or do math. It is also hard to find people who are going into that certain field of work or people who are qualified to do those jobs . Companies do not want to hire people unqualified and/or people they need to send back to college to teach how to do a job.

    1. I agree, no one is putting in the effort to get a job like that. Plus companies don't always have the money to send people back to college when they aren't qualified.

    2. I agree, it takes effort and years of commitment but then it turns out thats not a needed job no more.

    3. I agree, I feel as sometimes people don't know how much a certain job has to offer. I believe that it comes hand in hand with the laziness of today's society. I think it's a good idea to get high school students to go to job fairs around the area because some kids might be more interested in a certain job once they get to know more about it.

    4. i agree, you should already know how to do your job or just get trained to run you machine because they don't wanna waist there money to send you to collage just for you to quit later in a few months/years

    5. i agree in about 10 years robots will just replace everyone anyways

  7. I think one of the reasons for a high unemployment rate is that people are looking for jobs in fields like manufacturing, that require certain skills. There are many manufacturing jobs available, but people don't have the basic skills needed for them like running a computer. These skills aren't taught in most high schools which makes it harder for people to be hired.

    1. Yes Kodey, I get where you're coming from! If these skills aren't taught in many places then we can't expect people to have the skills to do the jobs that require them. That's why more high schools and colleges should have classes or programs that teach such things. There should at least be an option for it so that students who are interested can try the class as an elective!

    2. i also think that people wont pay for collage just to make cars and other things and plus there are lots of things you need to remember.

  8. I think that the development of computers and new tech has helped but many jobs have been taken by machines and now most jobs are in manufacturing and repairing. Not many can switch careers.

  9. People do not want to get jobs where they actually have to do something, they would rather just sit on the couch or something and get a easy job like working at the gas station or something. These jobs are not being filled because everybody is becoming very lazy and nobody wants to do anything. And other people would rather have higher paying jobs, there are not many people in between and thats the issue.

    1. I don't think that's true, plus the issue is the people who have NO job and no income. While there are people who are okay working at McDonalds, most people want jobs that will give them purpose. The people working the low-pay jobs are most likely giving their time to something else like educating themselves to get a better job. If people without work knew about those open jobs previously they would have figured out how to educate themselves and get the necessary training.

    2. I agree with Harley, there are a lot of people that want a job but don't want to actually have to do anything.

    3. I agree I think it really helps finding a job you actually want to go far in and something that you love doing. If you work at like a low paying job then you have to find another job to make more money and have to learn more and educate your self.

    4. I agree, pretty soon, people wont be pumping there own gas, because you'll have the robot. People now a days want a job at home, because its to hard to walk out the door and take a few steps.

  10. The problem is that manufacturing jobs need a certain set of skills. Most people don't have those skills, because they don't know about all the opportunities there is. The companies used to teach the how to do the jobs as they went. Now they expect people to know how to do it already. It's a failure of the schools, for not teaching people what jobs are available and how to do them. It's also a failure of the companies looking for workers for not teaching people how to run the machines they have.

    1. I agree, nowadays all companies are looking for is to make the most money possible and taking the time out to train every new person till they now everything they need to do, it makes them lose money.

  11. What a lot of jobs will do nowadays is pay for there employees to go to college so they can get the skills they need to fit the job. I know thats what the wood manufacturing place in Mellen does. The military will also pay for their solders to go to college so the can get the skills they need to earn more money.

  16. I think that its good that we can have technology to fill in the jobs that no one wants but also its kind of bad because it's taking over jobs that already had people working, but that leaves more job for people to fix all the technology that they made.

  17. most manufacturing jobs are open because there are not enough people with ambition to get the schooling for the jobs.
