IoT: The Internet of Things
- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smartphone.
- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.
This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".
In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.

Im not sure how i feel about this, i mean its crazy how far technology has come. The pros of this is, it'll make life easier, you could be away from your house and lets say you forgot to turn the heat down, you could go on your phone and turn it down that way, instead of turning around, or calling someone. The more chips we have the more hacks will happen, life self driving cars thats all computer, and any computer can get hacked.The cons of this is that more and more people are getting to addicted to their phones. Its bringing people away from the interaction part of life.

DeleteYou're right Jacob! It does have many pros and makes life a lot easier in ways but it's also scary what hackers can do and how far it is taking us from human interaction.
DeleteThats a good example with all the technology people will be able to save a lot more money and and now your lights can give you feed back on how to use them better in order to save money. The same thing with the thermostat, the only downside is security.
DeleteEven though IoT can be very useful, it can also be very dangerous. If a company says they are monitoring something like your heart rate or steps per day they could also be monitoring where you're going. Say you have a wireless thermostat that you can control from your phone by app. Yes, it can be very practical but it can be hacked. Someone could control your home's temperature or other things in your home depending on what you have connected to an app.
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% Talia loT can be very useful in many ways, but it can also be so dangerous so we really have to be careful. Make sure to watch out about what you go on because companies can monitor where you go at all times.
DeleteThat is true if they turn up your thermostat they could make your heat bill way more than it should be. Or if they turn on appliances they could drive up your electricity bill as well.
DeleteIts crazy how far technology is coming, its very cool and makes life a lot easier but its also scary because it gives out personal information. LoT can gather any information about where you are at all times, it can control your thermostat so if you forget to turn it down and leave for a vacation just go on your phone and turn it off.

DeleteI agree Harley, it is crazy how far technology has come considering the fact that we can control our home's temperature through our phones. Even though it's very practical, it's also very dangerous since it can give out personal inforamation.
DeleteI agree, it can be scary because when you leave and turn the thermostat down and whatnot other people can hack into your devices to see whether you are home or not and it will make it easier to break into your house considering you aren't home.
DeleteA pro from all this is that they make life more simple and takes a lot of the pressure off of your self, with all the reminders and sensors that can detect problems. A con is that they can be hacked and when they are hacked the hacker can get a log of all the things you do regarding that device. In the article there was one thing that couldn't really get hacked so you can see that it isn't a problem with all the items and because of the groups that deliberately try and hack the devices, the companies that make the devices are constantly upgrading the security.
ReplyDeleteThat's right, companies are upgrading the security and making these appliances safer. One of the drawbacks of the IoT is definitely the ability to be hacked and I know that I'd rather get more security.

ReplyDeleteI think that for the most part, the "iOT" is a great advantage in the technical world. I think that it is a good thing and make simple tasks a a lot easier. It is scary though how much more information can be given to hackers and criminals so we must use great caution.
ReplyDeleteYes and the IoT is very complex and one minor failure could have a major disaster. Also with more technology there becomes less jobs for people and lives become more dependent on technology, human interaction will become less and less.
DeleteThat's true Olivia, it a very good thought you had! It won't be good if the employment rate goes down because we are less dependent on workers and use technology more! People will have a much harder time finding employment and may even become poor or go in debt because of it! And if something breaks in the "iOT" the workplace will be screwed!

DeleteThe IoT can have many advantages, but at the same time it can have many downfalls. A pro is that it is easier to communicate from machine to machine, it can handle day to day tasks for busy people, and information is available faster. Some cons are that you have less and less privacy and it makes it easier for hackers to break into your lives.

DeleteTrue, hackers will if given the chance to hack into someones place just to get information or steal money. So privacy will always be the big issue when it come to new and better tech.

DeleteI think the IoT is a very controversial subject. There's so many ways it can make your life easier, like being able to access your house lights from your phone. The only downside I can see is the possibility of your entire house being shut down by a hacker. I don't know how secure these appliances are, but I don't want any type of malware melting my ice cream.

DeleteThe IoT can have upsides and downsides, IoT does make life easier in the perception that you can connect machines and make things easier. Although the downsides can be for example hackers, shut downs and more.

DeleteThe IoT can be beneficial, and in other instances can be harmful. It can be very efficient at times. The IoT can help you to connect to more than 1 thing at a time. An example would be using your smartphone to dim the lights, turn up the TV, and control your thermostat. It also can be harmful in the fact that it can affect your security and privacy. Your information could be stolen, and it can allow hackers to tamper with your confidential information.

DeleteI think that it has made life very convenient and makes you worry less about things that could happen to yourself or your property, but this has also made our generation very lazy and so reliant on our technology. We are so obsessed with technology that we tend to forget about the real world.

ReplyDeleteI think that technology makes it easier to do some things but at the same time any computer can get hacked and what not. Like if you have something that will lock your doors through your phone someone can hack into that and unlock the doors and rob your entire house or someone can monitor things about you and whatnot if you have those things that can say your diet and everything else.

DeleteIts funny how we rely on technology so much these days and how we don't even have to be in are cars to start them, sometime i think its good to have lots of technology but at times i feel like people use it to much for simple things like turning off a light or locking a door.
