The Making of a Vine Celebrity

Not only has this guy become famous in an instant, it looks like he's not just a "flash in the pan" because is seems as though he understands how to use social media apps to promote himself and other things around him. [Update: He and everyone else IS a "flash in the pan" as far as Vine is concerned - since they're pulling the plug on Vine!]
Had you heard of Jerome before reading the article? What do you think of what he's done on Vine? What do you think about this kind of opportunity with mobile apps, such as Snapchat? Can anybody do it? Will such fame last, and is it something that can be made into a legitimate business?

Me personally, I think it is a shaky business because you will need to watch everything you do. And if you mess up the whole world is watching and everyone will know. In the article it said that man was homeless so if you ask me I think anyone can do it. And I think it can be a legitimate business because most people who are famous on youtube have some kind of merchandise they sell, and on top of add revenue you can make a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteI agree you can't mess up or saying anything offensive because then you will get a lot of backlash. For example, take Logan Paul, a famous youtuber, who made a vlog of himself on a trip in Japan. He made a very hurtful comment towards suicide and now everybody hates him.
DeleteYeah Sean you're right. Famous people, even youtubers, really need to be careful what they say because people tend to get offended pretty easily these days and if they say something that people don't like they can loose fans quickly, and not make a lot of money!Thats one of the reasons I think it is a great side job to earn extra cash but shouldn't be a person's only source of income!
DeleteI agree you can make tons of money if you do it right if not you can mess everything up and yea i think anyone can do it but they would just have to watch what they are putting out for everyone to see.
DeleteI think that mobile apps such as snapchat, instagram, youtube, etc can give people an opportunity to become popular if they are dedicated. While becoming popular is not for everyone on social media, those who have the drive to take on such a task can make their time worth while. Social media can be made into a legitimate business, but it would be smart to have a backup plan if/when the fame is lost.
ReplyDeleteI agree Shanaya. It can be a great way to become famous but it can be very hard for some people so it is important to have a backup plan as you said. If it doesn't work out for the person and they don't have something else to fall back on it can be very bad and cause them into go into debt or have trouble finding other jobs if that was how they made their money.
DeleteSocial media accounts are a good way for people who are dedicated to it, to make good money. As long as they are willing to get the hate comments and they don't worry about what other people say then it is a perfect job.

DeleteI agree, all these people are dropping out of college and high school just to go make youtube videos and you only hear about the success stories but I am sure that there a whole ton of people who dropped out and still didn't make it.

ReplyDeleteI think that it it's a great idea to try and start a business by making vines or videos and using social media. I also believe it is easy to do. However, I also believe that a person shouldn't get their hopes up too much when first starting out or rely fully on being internet famous for their main source of income because it doesn't work out for everyone and can be hard to get fans!
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree that is a great idea, especially if you enjoy doing it. If you enjoy posting pictures or videos, it won't feel as much like a job compared to something that you dread doing. It can take months or maybe even years to be able to fully rely on your income from social media. I also think that it is a good idea to have a backup plan incase this doesn't work out for you.
DeleteI agree Kaitlyn, I think it can be easy but people get their hopes up, it can be hard to get fans when you first start. So dropping everything right when you start might not be a good idea because you do need a source of income.
DeleteI think it's a great idea to become a star on social media, you can create a new platform for yourself. But if you ever watch big youtube stars it is seriously a full time job. Some can only post videos a couple times a week because after filming the video, it can take many hours editing and if you aren't familiar technology it can be even harder to start up this type of career.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this statement. It opens a lot of new opportunities for a person and also gives you a job for a long time as long as you have a lot of followers. You also have to keep up the hard work and upload videos or pictures often. It can cause a lot of stress on a person.
DeleteOnce you become popular, you can make a pretty good living. And you're absolutely right about starting up. It takes some practice and experience, but once you're skilled enough you will be able to make a pretty good living.

DeleteBecoming an online professional is pretty cool. Being a youtube star or any other public figure would be fun, but it also comes with a lot of hard work. You can also make a lot of money and become very popular. It also comes with a lot of downfalls though. You always have eyes on you and you can get many haters and negative comments.
ReplyDeleteI agree, viewers tend to pick you apart, so it is very important to be confident in yourself. If a viewer comments something that may get to you, remember that "no one can make you feel inferior without your consent." It is very important to have this mindset, otherwise the hate that you receive will lead to your downfall.
DeleteI think if you became like a you tuber and stuff you'd have a very good life and make a lot of money. Also though you are going to have people watching you all the time and that has got to be scary. But if you want to become a star thats what you are going to have to deal with.

DeleteI agree, youtube and being a star can be good sometimes but some things you have to deal with that you normally wouldn't have to. Eyes and cameras are always on you.
DeleteYou have to put in the work though. You can't just make a random video, put it on YouTube and suddenly you're famous. You have to be popular enough to be a partner and get money from ads. The hardest part is attracting new people to view your content.

If you post a funny video or are pretty, you can get famous within minutes on instagram, snapchat, youtube, etc. If you have enough followers you will start getting sponserships and begin making money off your posts. But, when doing this you have to be dedicated to providing quality content for your viewers and eventually that becomes a full time job.
ReplyDeleteThe more people that follow you and watch your content, the more money you make. So your income almost always increases if you keep up post interesting videos or posts but one you take a break it will start decreasing.

DeleteTalia I agree 100%, I also think it is very easy to become "internet famous" now. If you have a you tube channel and have a lot of subscribers you are considered famous. But like you said providing quality content for your viewers can become a full time job.

DeleteOnly that small percent of people will get that instant popularity but the rest work their way up from post to post may take days months or even years. Being a you tuber does not mean that your going to get alot of money or have a high fan base.But once you start becoming noticed by the society with a high fan base you will start getting sponsors for your content.But it all depends what type of content you create, lets say that your playing and making content on World of warships, since its created by wargaming you have a higher chance of being sponsored by them but if not then the chances drop. But part of being a you tuber is also to deal with hate luckily i have't had to encounter hate on stream, but it takes alot of time or not depending on how you do it or what you do.
ReplyDeleteI do think you can become famous off of apps and such but I do think you have to be dedicated because sometimes you don't blow up like other people do right away. The more followers and the more famous you become, you can make a living off of it, from being paid for posts to then being a company promoter, but i do think you should have a back up plan. Fame sometimes doesn't last forever.

DeletePersonally I haven't heard of Jerome, and I think the article over exaggerates his popularity. There are a lot of internet stars now and it's pretty normal at this point. If you got something that people will view then you have a business. People will get bored of it eventually which is why you need to keep coming up with new stuff to stay popular. It's important for the companies too. If you're watching some guy's video and an ad pops up you know about that product or movie or whatever is being advertised. It's a very simple concept and can be very successful in some cases. However it's all up to you and what you put out there. The key to making money from this is being able to attract new viewers, and if you do that well enough you're basically famous.

ReplyDeleteYes Brooke you are so right, being a social media influencer has its ups and downs. Everyone has their eyes on you and if you make a mistake you are no longer liked. You have to deal with a lot of hate and that would make a person feel really bad about themselves.
DeleteYes, I agree. It can be nice getting money from it, but the bad people on there can be harsh about what they say to you or about you. Some people comment rude things based on the fact that they want to feel better about themselves.

Most Youtubers work by them selves and they don't get payed that much, Ya you can get asked to sponsor a business but that still doesn't mean you get lots of money like everyone thinks.

If you post a funny video and someone sees it and shares it then all their followers see it and so on, pretty soon your video is seen by tons of people. By doing this and gaining followers you can easily make a career.

ReplyDeleteBeing an influencer on social media can be hard because it takes a lot of work to get there. There are a lot of negative comments and what not on social media so it can be hard emotionally too. I think influencers shouldn't be paid as much as they do because thats not much hard work. They really have to watch everything they do in public because things can spread quickly and they usually try to keep a good reputation. Eventually the fame will run out if their stuff starts getting boring and if they are only on social media. Pretty much anyone can become an influencer but usually you have to look really pretty and have a nice body because thats how social media works. Another thing is, you have to know how to take really good photos of yourself or have someone else

Being an influencer on social media can effect you emotionally too because there is a lot to do even if you love your job and what you do it can still be rough on you sometimes.
