You're Messed Up!

You're Messed Up!

You're addicted!  You're messed up!

Read the following articles (don't forget to read some of the comments after the articles). They all talk about the effects on teens from social networking, texting etc - all of this "new" technology.

What are the dangers?  We're not talking about why the internet itself is dangerous - not talking about predators.  We're talking about "quality of life" here - your time; how social networking makes you feel about the world, and how it conditions you to behave.  "Real life" vs. "online life".

Your first post should be about what the negative effects of your online life might be. How might things like social networking (Facebook, Twitter) affect you in a negative way? This is a difficult question because you probably don't think that these things really are affecting you negatively.  You can handle it, right?

THEN, after a day or two, in your response to a fellow student's post, argue in FAVOR of social networking - how does it 'enhance' your life - how does it make your life better?

This is a 'deep topic'.  One sentence answers are NOT going to cut it, so really think about your answers, and argue your point.

How Teens View Their Digital Lives

Teens Say They're Addicted to Social Media, Texting

Don't Blame Social Media if Your Teen Is Unsocial, It's Your Fault

  4. Social media can cause people to see unrealistic things. For example if I see something that might be cute but no one could really know what happens behind the scenes. Things aren't what they seem to be all the time.

    1. Yes, people spend lots of time editing their pictures and it can be very deceiving. When you then see that person in real life they look nothing like their picture that they posted on social media. Also they may seem less happy and energetic than it appeared from their post.

    2. I agree a lot of things can be misinterpreted on social media. You never really know what they could be hiding.

    3. I agree, a lot of people don't understand that not everything you read it true.

    4. I agree, lots of pictures and things are edited on social media causing people to see things that really aren't true. This can be a problem when people go to the extreme to recreate these pictures.

  5. In the article Don't blame social media they said that the reason for teens being so addicted to social media was because their parents wont let them hang out in real life and I don't think that people make a big enough effort to hang out in real life because of the internet. With social media people can see what all their friends are up to without getting out of the house, which I think is crazy.

    2. i get what you're saying Sean. However, I do think people still make an effort to hang out in real life. It's just that its harder to do so because they aren't used to it. They are nervous in front of the real life company of others because they're more comfortable with talking online!

    3. Maybe that's how it is for certain people, but I'd like to argue the point that people don't always have time to spend time in person or call someone about the crazy thing that happened at work today. If you have a phone you can take a quick picture and it can go straight to Facebook or Twitter or whatever you feel like using. Sure a few people will go to the extreme and use all of their free time on their social media accounts, but the reality is most people have even better social lives because of it.

    4. i agree Sean i think its crazy that you can know what people are doing without them leaving the house or going places. thats why we aren't making an effort to see people because its easier to do it on social media.

  6. Social networking can have many negative affects on your life. Like it says in the article How Teens View Their Digital Life, social media can make you feel like you are not popular because you don't get enough likes. Many people, especially girls, feel like they need to edit their pictures and feel left out when they see other people posting pictures with their friends. This puts extra stress on teens that is not necessary.

    1. I agree with Shanaya. Social media and being online is also a cause of cyberbullying and other negative things like becoming addicted and gaining depression and/or anxiety .

      Delete
    2. I see your side Shanaya, but I also think that some people don't revolve their lives around social media and if they do they probably lack some social skills. Social media can be positive as in people can be nice and it can give people confidence when seeing their likes, but also like you said, it can also have a negative effect on people's self esteem.

  7. I agree, people are on social media way more now days than before. People would rather have a conversation online than in real life. If you're in a room with your friends you're probably going to be texting each other rather than talking in person. And everybody has a phone.

    1. i agree, social media is making talking to people in real life harder because everyone does this online now.

  8. I think that social media is making it harder for people to actually communicate with others in person. It is causing people to become more shy. I'm not saying it is impossible for the younger generation to communicate in person. I'm simply saying that with all the time they spend online they're spending less time talking to people in person. Therefore, it feels more awkward and uncomfortable when a younger person first starts talking to a new friend in person since they were previously able to just text and not actually look a person in the eye and talk face to face.

    1. I agree Kaitlyn, social media is causing people to become more shy. It can be awkward and uncomfortable for people to have a normal conversation in person.

    2. Except social media can make it so much easier to communicate on short notice. Let's say your working and you take a break for lunch. It won't last long but you want to talk to someone and your coworkers are annoying. Boom, you see your friend posted something on facebook or whatever and you start texting. Now you've got a conversation going on and you're not bored anymore.

    3. i agree Kate people get so use to social media they don't know how to talk to people in person or they are too shy to talk in person so they just text them.

  9. Social networking can cause negative impacts on some teen's lives. It can make it harder for them to communicate in real life rather than through a screen. Through the screen, they have more confidence because they aren't face to face with the person they're talking to. Because of this, some teens lack necessary people skills and struggle keeping a face to face converstaion going.

    1. I agree it is way easier to talk to somebody through a screen then face to face. Which can lead to social issues.

  10. Social media can have negative affects on people's lives. It causes people to avoid human face to face interaction and it can cause teens to have a lack of confidence because they might not get as many likes as their friends or they might not have as many followers .

    1. Yes, avoiding human face to face interaction will lead to teens not knowing how to have a conversation with others face to face. Having a conversation with others face to face is a skill that is needed to get a job and be successful in life.

  11. Social media can cause a lack of communication in real life between teens. Because of social media teens are having a harder time to have a real life conversation. They are used to interacting through their phones and often don't understand the power of the words.

    1. I agree and over text it is very hard to express emotion sometimes and surtin conversations are just better off being face to face.

  12. I don't believe that social media has negative effects. The articles didn't really describe any negative consequences for using it, instead they explained the widespread reach of social media. I think people are overreacting to the social media boom. It is the most connected time in history we all have access to communication at our fingertips. Social media is just an extra way of communicating.

    1. I agree because people that have relatives that live far away, they wouldn't be able to contact them and see what kind of stuff they are up to without social media or the internet.

    2. Ya i mean Joe is right an so is Sean, if you have relatives that live all the way on the other side of the world i mean how are you going to get ahold of them or see them without text and or facetime

  13. Social networking has changed how we do many things, is has caused many things to change. Kids and teens don't have to talk to people in person as often anymore, which causes more people not to know how to talk to people. While social media does cause negative affects on peoples lives is does have some positives that come out of everything being online.

  14. Social media means we have less human interaction, missing that vital connectivity we all need to make us feel less lonely. In today's world it is harder than ever before to make real life friends because of social media. That being the case we all need to get this problem resolved.

    1. Cayden is correct, it is harder to make friends in person and have a human interaction because people hide behind their phones and tend to have less of a life and stay at home and forget what the real world is like .

    2. I agree with Cayden she it is really hard to make friends in person if you are always on your phone. This generation I think does it a lot.

  17. Social Media really means less time for our generation to have face to face interaction and that is and this impacts us as whole. Today there is not enough real friends now a days its all ibf's so then you are on your on your phone way more. Our generation should start having more conversations with the people around us.

  20. I think social media is causing people to talk in person way less and tend to be less social. Social media pictures can be deceiving because they get edited and everything else so its not actually what it appears to be. like how girl post pictures of themselves but edit it so they look skinny and everything else and it makes other people feel bad and like they look horrible because it doesnt look like them.
